President's Message

Dear Fellow Alums
Magnificent. Inspirational. Awesome. Those are the words that come to mind when
I look at the beautiful building that we built last year. I am talking, of course, about the Harvey Dearstyne
III Hike and Trip Center. WE DID IT. All of us. After a year of planning, fund raising, and building ,
we did it in time to be ready for last year's hike and trip staff and hundreds of campers to use. Starting
in July, the Hike and Trip Center began fulfilling its mission as the launching pad for campers' ventures into
Adirondacks and beyond. Through the efforts of the Camp Chingachgook Alumni Association,
the friends and family of Harvey Dearstyne III, the Glens Falls High School Class of 1972,
and Chingachgook supporters around the country, we helped build this beautiful building which will inspire
campers for generations to come. THANK YOU to all contributors. Your Association dues worked VERY hard last year.
They got you this newsletter, they contributed to the dining hall building campaign, the camp scholarship fund,
the Order of Chingachgook, and of course the Hike and Trip Center.
Your Alumni Association is growing larger every year. If you have not joined,
or if your membership has lapsed, NOW is the time to rekindle the memories and to ensure your participation in
the growth of the BEST camp in the country, on the BEST lake in the country. Send your dues now and be sure
to update your camp friends on what you are doing. Chingachgook has made tremendous improvements over the past few
years due to the continuing support of the Capital District YMCA as well as the Alumni Association.
The Council has started an ambitious project to update, expand, and improve your access to information
through a Chingachgook Alumni Web Site. Check things out at www.chingachgook.org. If you would like to
get on our email list, please email gpainter@cdymca.org.
Camp Chingachgook is much more than the summer camp we all know and love. With
year-round programming, NOW is the time for you to consider participating in a family camp, a work today,
an Order tap-out, or any of the wide variety of exciting events that the camp offers. Bring the kids to the
Halloween Trail. Rent a winterized cabin and go snow-tubing, x-c skiing, or just relax. Make NEW
camp memories.
I want to take the opportunity to express the appreciation of the Alumni Council for the
leadership and dedication of George Painter for his part in building Chingachgook to its current level of
excellence. George is a tireless promoter, a motivator of people, and inspiration to
all of us on the Council. Without George's vision and guidance, the Hike Center would not be a reality. When you visit the camp next,
be sure to take a few moments to talk to George for an update on all the new things happening, future
plans, and how YOU can participate.

See you at the Alumni Outing July 20.
Sincerely,
Gary August, Alumni Council President
