Alumni Dedicate New War Canoes
It was a beautiful summer day and more than 80 Chingachgook Alumni attended the July 1999
Alumni Day (the largest participation ever). The highlight of the day was the dedication of Chingachgook's new
26-foot war canoes the Alumni Association donated to the camp in honor of John and Joanne Mahoney.
Old friends, camp tours, an all-camp assembly, the first annual war canoe race with staff
challenging the old-timers, and a chicken barbeque at the lake ensured a memorable Alumni reunion.
The Alumni Association, dedicated to preserving Chingachgook's traditions, raised funds for the
purchase of four custom-built fiberglass canoes. Two 1942 Old Towne canoes were laid to rest in the rafters of the
dining hall five years ago. Alums wanted today's youngsters to experience the team-work fostered in paddling a large canoe that they
enjoyed as campers.
Alumni Council President John Rose and Chingachgook Board of managers Chair Jim Dunham
presented special canoe-paddle awards to key supporters Richard, MacKinnon, Scott Sheldon, Michael brockbank, and Michael Bell.
We also awarded a special paddle to Joanne Mahoney for her and John's service to the YMCA.
